Bob Simmers, Jamestown and Bismarck, ND

Era:  Legacy & Modern

Car #: 13

Class(es): Late Model & Modified

Club Affiliation:  Flagman

Bob Simmers raced for over 25 years, driving primarily Late Models with the always clean, green and white “Lucky 13” during a time many racers would not paint a car green or run the #13, considering it unlucky for racing. His tow rig was a converted 1946 Flex bus that pulled a double decker trailer well before they became common in racing.

Tri-Can was the Late Model sanctioning body of the time before Wissota was created and Bob raced as many as six times each week, with one year racing a phenomenal 130 shows. In 1980 he won the Tri-Can Late Model Championship running a small block Chevy engine when almost all of his competitors chose the venerable 454 big block. Knowing he was at a disadvantage with horsepower, Simmers concentrated on the handling of a lighter weight car. Within a few years almost everyone then switched from the big block to the small block engine.

In 1989 Simmers took some time off from active racing and became flagman at the old Bismarck Speedway, then at the new Dacotah Speedway in Mandan, along with the Missouri Valley Speedway, and at Jamestown as well. Like many of the people who built racing in the area, Simmers felt the need to give back to the sport he loved.

In 1993 Simmers teamed up with an old classmate--Jim Sahr from Ace Chassis and built a new modified. He was the Points Champ at both Missouri Valley and Dacotah Speedway’s in 1995 and was named Dacotah Speedway’s “Driver of the Year.” In1997 at age 50, Bob retired from racing and started building muscle cars as a hobby. Today he drag races a 1974 Chevy Nova and cruises around town with his many muscle car era Pontiacs.

Bob Simmers helped build both the Legacy and Modern eras of racing in Bismarck-Mandan.
