John Gartner started following racing with his father Johnny in the late 1950s. After John’s father passed away John started his racing career by teaming up with fellow shop mates Don Sayer and Paul Mueller to build his first car. In 1976 John won three features and was hooked for life. In 1983 John teamed up with car owner Warren Greenwell in the new Super Stock class, racing in Bismarck, Minot, Jamestown, and Fargo on a regular basis. He won the 1983 Minot Harvest 100 and several features. In 1984 won the Super Stock Season Championship in Bismarck. His 1984 Dodge Daytona was featured in Circle Track Magazine—one of the first North Dakota drivers to be featured in a national magazine.

 

While he started as the Bismarck-Mandan Stock Car Association first promoter of the old Bismarck Speedway in 1988. He worked closely with friends and a whole host of hardworking volunteers, to build the current Dacotah Speedway in Mandan in 1990. In 1991 John was hired as director of the Mandan Park District that owned the Dacotah Speedway track and help shepard the speedway through those early years.

 

John’s contribution to racing goes beyond the track. He is an key part in continual years of racing at Dacotah Speedway. Always being there, willing to help as mentor to the many track officials. He has guided them to become better at there duties with a yearly officials training program. John’s teaching ability was nationally recognized when he was asked to speak at the RPM Promoters workshop.

 

As one of the founders of the Dakota Classic Modified Tour, John has guided the tour for over 27 years. His leadership has brought together Western North Dakota Racetracks for a once a year nationally recognized event, bringing recognition to dirt modified racing in Western North Dakota.

 

John is a foundation builder of the Modern Racing Era for our area.
