Car #9

Class(es): Super Stock & Modified

Club Affiliation:  Racer, Past Board Member, President, Flagman and Promoter

Don Helbling began his involvement with The Bismarck-Mandan Stock Car Association in 1982 when he built a Ford super stock that ran at the Fasttrak Speedway east of Bismarck. In 1991 he built and raced a WISSOTA Modified until he retired from driving in 1994.

Don became involved with The Bismarck-Mandan Stock Car Association board in the early 80’s. He served as the club’s President for many years. He led the transition from a private promoted racetrack to a club run facility that is still in existence today.

Don’s contributions to racing in this area goes beyond the track. He was the hands on leader when the club moved to its new facility in 1990. Don worked with the Mandan Park Board setting up a fundraising mechanism that built the current racing facility known as Dacotah Speedway.

Helbling’s unique knowledge of business and construction inspired a dedicated group of volunteers that built the lower grandstands, the old announcer’s tower, the current pit concession stand, water trucks and scale. He was also instrumental in the creation of Swap Meets and working with area tracks to coordinate scheduling by working together. Don brought ideas he had gained by going to NASCAR tracks and adapted them to racing in the local area. His ability to stretch a dollar while continually improving the track and its equipment was instrumental in the early years when funds were tight.

As club President, Don was there during the early years, always providing leadership when the time called for it. He had a unique vision of what racing could be and he found ways to make it happen.

Don is a foundation builder of the Modern Racing Era for Bismarck-Mandan racing.
