Beautiful Spring Weather Leads to a Full House at Dacotah Speedway

Race fans could not have asked for a more perfect day for racing than on Friday, May 5th. Temperatures surpassed 80 degrees and a slight breeze was just enough to keep fans cool throughout the warm May evening. Drivers from all over the Midwest traveled to compete in the Season Opener presented by Northwest Tire, a 113 to be exact.

Berg Runs Away with Sport Compact Win
Jason Berg picked up where he left off last season by holding onto the lead early in the IMCA Sport Compact feature. Young Chase Schlafmann was close behind in second but the real battle was for third between Ken Sandberg and Alex Thompson. A caution with four to go allowed Alex Thompson and father, Stan Thompson, the chance to slip by Sandberg on restart. Sandberg continued to fall throughout the field, losing positions to Andy Reed and Craig Kastner. As the laps wound down, Reed and Kastner battled hard for fifth. As they raced to the checkered flag, the two drivers made contact allowing Reed to hold onto fifth place. Alex Thompson finished fourth behind father, Stan Thompson. Chase Schlafmann finished a distance second behind feature winner Jason Berg.

Michaelsohn Cruises to Victory in Hobby Stock Feature

Curt Michaelsohn and Keith McCleary started on the front row of the Hobby Stock feature. Michaelsohn quickly grabbed the lead as McCleary,John Gartner Jr and Brandon Anderson raced three wide for second. Gartner Jr split the two drivers to take second and quickly challenge for the lead.Cautions came early and often but Michaelsohn was able to hold off Gartner Jr each time. Michaelsohn started to pull away but a late race caution reset the field with three laps to go. On the restart, Gartner Jr had his hands full with McCleary and Jeremy Engelhardt. It was a three car battle for second before Engelhardt bumped Gartner out of the way to cross the Open Road Honda finish line second, ahead of Keith McCleary and Brent Vetter. Gartner Jr rounded out the top as Curt Michaelsohn cruised to the Hobby Stock feature victory.

Wiest Prevails in INEX Legends Feature Victory

Bismarck’s Casey Martin started alongside defending track champion Donavin Wiest in the INEX Legends feature. When the green flag waved,it was a three car battle for the lead between Martin, Wiest and Drew Papke. Martin started to fade early, losing positions to Nate Keena, Troy Hoff and Brian Schriado. Meanwhile, Papke and Wiest battled side by side for the lead. Wiest had the advantage in corners 1 and 2 but Papke was stronger in corners 3 and 4. As the leaders raced door to door, Hoff was all over the rear bumper of Keena for third. With three laps to go, Wiest got a terrific run off turn two that gave him the momentum to edge Papke into corners three and four and grab the lead at the start/finish line. They continued to race side by side as the white flag waved but a car spun out in turn four ended the race under caution. Wiest was declared the feature winner over Drew Papke. Nate Keena held off Troy Hoff for fourth as Brian Schriado finished fifth.

Michaelsohn Wins Late Race Shootout

Zach Frederick drew the pole for the WISSOTA Street Stock feature race. Frederick held onto the lead at the start but outside pole sitter, Matt Dosch was hot on his heels. They raced side by side until Chris Michaelsohn of Wishek made it a three wide battle for the lead. Michaelsohn shuffled into the lead as Frederick fell into the clutches of Royce Jawaski and Deryk Voller. Jawaski slipped by Frederick, bringing Voller with him. Michaelsohn found some extra speed along the guardrail and he started to pull away from Dosch late in the race.  Unfortunately,Michaelsohn’s lead quickly disappeared when a late race caution regrouped the field with four laps to go. On the restart, Michaelsohn pulled away once more as Dosch tried to hold off Voller. Frederick, who passed Jawaski on the restart was all over Voller’s rear bumper. With one lap to go, Frederick completed the pass but suddenly lost power just before the finish line, almost losing third place to Deryk Voller and Royce Jawaski. Matt Dosch finished second in a brand new race car behind defending track champion, Chris Michaelsohn.

Wolla Dominates IMCA Modified Feature

Pole sitter Jason Wolla and defending track champion, Marlyn Seidler battled for the lead in the IMCA Modified feature. Wolla quickly pulled away as Travis Hagen and Jeremy Keller battled for third. Keller quickly passed Hagen for third and reeled in Seidler for second. As Wolla’s lead continued to grow, Keller quickly caught and passed Seidler for second. Seidler now had his hands full with a fast Hagen and Spencer Wilson behind him. However, not even lapped traffic could slow down Wolla as he quickly negotiated his way through the slower cars. Jason Wolla led all 25 laps to win the first IMCA Modified feature of the 2017 season at Dacotah Speedway. Jeremy Keller finished a distant second ahead of Marlyn Seidler. Travis Hagen held off a strong Spencer Wilson for fourth.
