HOF Nominee - Danny Herman

Posted by John Gartner 10/29/2019 8:06:17 AM

Danny Herman came from a racing family as his father and HOF inductee “Lefty” Herman was one of the pioneers of racing in the Bismarck-Mandan area. He started racing at the old Central States Race Track in1972 driving a street stock car. In 1974 Herman moved up to the Late Model class with the #61 on the side of the bright red Chevy Camaro. He raced for a time in the Tri-Can Late Model series and found success at tracks all around the region. His best year was 1976 when he finished third in season points. His last year in a Late Model was in 1980.

Since the local track closed in 1981 and 1982, Herman switched to the popular Super Stock class, finishing third in points in both 1984 and 1985. The class then switched to the Late Model Sportsman division in 1990, so Herman made the switch and had his best year in 1991 when he again finished third in points. In 1995 Danny switched divisions again, and this time it was the Wissota Modified class that got his interest. Herman raced until 1998 when he passed away at the young age of just 48.

Herman prided himself in building almost all of his own equipment, just like his father had when racing first got started in the area. He also was a hard charging driver that often refused newer technology like power steering in the early days when race cars were thought to be “man handled” through the corners.

Danny’s son Steve also helped pit for his father and raced himself for a time—becoming one of  the area’s first third generation drivers.
