"Lefty" started racing after he had left the US Army in 1950. He raced for a time at a track that was located between Bismarck and Mandan. The Herman family was instrumental in constructing a stock car track on the Rennick farm seven miles east of Bismarck on “Old, Old” Highway 10 that was called the Capitol City Track and later renamed Twin City Speedway. Herman won the points championship in 1954. He raced with his brother Eldon “Eldy” Herman and his father also worked on his cars over the years. The entire family were true pioneers in the sport of stock car racing in the area.

Herman raced throughout the rest of the 1950’s at tracks all over the state until he retired as a driver in 1961. He moved to Jamestown but still participated in racing as a car owner for several years. He passed away in 1997 at the age of 68. His brother "Eldy" is still a racing fan and has helped the club by submitting old photos and history from the earliest days of racing in the area.
