HOF Nominee - Lynn Christiansen

Posted by John Gartner 10/21/2019 8:38:23 AM

Lynn started racing in 1967 at the old Dacotah Speedway on “old, old” Highway 10 southeast of Bismarck. His first car had the number 172 in a class that would be very similar to our current hobby stock division. Later that same year the class was switched to the street class, and with that switch, Lynn changed his number to #45.

Dacotah Speedway closed its gate for good after the 1970 season so drivers started looking for a new track and they also created the Capital City Drivers Association in 1973. Lynn was their first president. Christiansen turned the color of his Chevelle to blue and white, with wins starting to be as popular as his paint scheme. In 1976 the driver still sporting that #45 placed third in points, and 4th in 1977. The class at the time had many talented drivers, almost all using the powerful big block engines right out of muscle cars of the era.

In 1979 Lynn decided to move up to the new Super Stock division that allowed headers and a much wider racing tire. He finished in 4th place in 1980 but, once again, the track closed due to financial issues. With a new promoter secured the track re-opened in 1983. Gordy Berg offered Christiansen his #44 car so he took on the role of driver only in 1984. His last year racing was in 1988.

During his 20 plus years as a driver Lynn won many heats, trophy dashes and features over his career. Always friendly and the life of the post race party, Christiansen had many friends and pitmen over the years. Several went on to race themselves or started turning wrenches for other drivers. Both of his boys went on to be key pitmen for other drivers. His son Mike “Bubba” Christiansen currently serves as a board member for the Bismarck-Mandan Stock Car Association and crew chief to long time driver Marlyn Seidler of Underwood.

Lynn will be officially inducted into the Dacotah Speedway Hall of Fame at the Awards Banquet on Saturday, November 2nd. Social hour begins at 5:00pm with dinner and program starting at 6:00pm. Tickets are $20 each and are available for purchase at the front door. All are welcome to attend.
